SHS Salon - Sarah Hepburn Stylists

London, UK
This hair salon was designed for Sarah Hepburn Stylists (SHS), led by stylist Sarah Castañares and her partner, artist David Schmidt. Sarah approached us two years ago to renovate the space and bring it in line with her creative work and modern brand. She envisioned a bold, industrial look with pops of neon green, ample product storage, and functional zones including a reception, waiting area, laptop-friendly worktops for clients, and additional seating and wash stations.

We reimagined the salon as an open-plan layout, with long countertops running along both sides of the space. Custom steel-framed mirrors—made in Spain—feature hidden storage at the back. At the entrance, a bespoke reception area includes a bench for waiting guests, a wall-mounted cabinet, and a display unit for hair extensions—all made from the same steel as the mirrors to keep the material palette cohesive.

Two key feature units—a hair product display and an extension storage wall—were made from perforated metal meshwith integrated LED lighting that can shift colours, adding depth and energy to the industrial scheme.
To conceal coat storage and stylist aprons, we introduced vertical neon green bars at the rear of the space, echoing the accent colour used throughout. We also added a third wash station and extra cage-like metal shelving for back-of-house storage.

The wall treatments are one of the salon’s highlights: raw steel panels run along the lower half, blending seamlessly with the dark timber floors. The remaining wall surfaces were hand-finished by David Schmidt using layers of graffiti-style paint, stencilling, and iridescent details in black, grey, and neon green tones. David’s artwork, along with pieces by other artists, is displayed throughout the salon.

For durability and contrast, we installed concrete-effect tiles around the wash stations and behind the reception desk. At the very back of the salon, we designed a discreet kitchenette and a compact WC for staff use.

The lighting design features suspended track-mounted spotlights, carefully positioned to highlight work areas and key wall features—maintaining the raw, industrial edge that Sarah envisioned.
